Counseling Philosophy and Approach

My work is multifaceted. My goal is to create a safe space for clients to become aware of the many parts of themselves, to accept themselves, and to learn and practice new skills. We work together to build self-esteem, improve relationships, and build awareness of strengths and inner resources. I help clients go as deep as they want to go, but I believe that it does not have to be hard to be good! There are many paths to the goal of feeling better about yourself and healing old wounds. Feelings do come up. I teach you how to handle them, but I try to help you pace the work, so that you are in control. Core Beliefs Psychotherapy (CBP) often brings up childhood feelings very quickly, but we pace this, as well, doing skill work, breathing, and energy work to help heal the hurts. Often I utilize TAT (Tapas Acupressure Technique) to help clear bad memories and “stuck places” as they come up, so you do not have to go over and over the same material. You won't “forget” what happened, but you won't feel traumatized by it any more.
Of course, the basis for all of this work is creating a safe, healing, and trusting environment, the core of the therapeutic relationship.

Techniques & Methods

  • I use humor, acceptance, and humility to build the therapeutic relationship.
  • I use TAT, Tapas Acupressure Technique to help heal traumas, ineffective beliefs about the self, and "stuck places."
  • I use CBP, Core Beliefs Psychotherapy, to help the client validate and heal the injured child-self, correcting "mistaken core beliefs."
  • I teach breathing to help connect with the body, the emotions, and the wise self.
  • I use hypnotherapy and guided imagery to help clients develop awareness of their strengths, and to build safety and self-efficacy.
  • I use metaphors to help create natural solutions.
  • I use Gestalt to help clients see and accept different parts of themselves and others.
  • I use concepts from developmental theory to highlight normal transitions.
  • I use cognitive approaches to help clients retrain their thinking about themselves.
  • Most of all, I use my humanness and sense of self to help clients heal and grow.
